Nintendo had submitted an official application to trademark Wii Remote in March this year. However, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) have suspended Nintendo’s application for the same and sent a letter which indicates that the word remote is far too common and incapable to be trademarked. Still, it is possible for the console Nintendo to trademark the term. For this, Nintendo will have to disclaim any ownership of the word “remote” except for when used with “Wii Remote.”
Nintendo could also use Wiimote as a trademark which is commonly used to describe its Wii controller. GamePolitics reported, Fobis Technologies, a manufacture company in Florida that makes TV remote control for children, has owned the trademark for Wiimote since 2000. Nintendo got engaged with Fobis regarding the purchase of the trademark but somehow things didn’t work and Nintendo walked away from those discussions.
