The rumor has finally been confirmed about the UK developer Free Radical. The company has let go off 140 employees which is 75% of its workforce. This will be effective 31st December. The company is now left with only 40 or so number of employees and is now officially on sale. Several companies are showing interest in buying this company. A Free Radical employee had previously stated that the company was working on two secret projects which would be published by more than one publisher.
Haze and TimeSplitters maker Free Radical went under administration on December 18th. The employees still thought that the company will not close. All this will make the company lose its status among UK’s 150 independent developers.
It seems Santa has come with unemployment as gift in the stockings. Last we heard of Factor 5 was that they were thinking of compiling Rogue Squadron. It was a compilation of the N64 and Game Cube titles, all on one Wii disc. However, looking at the current scenario, it looks as if Factor 5 is also going under bad times, much like other game developers.
There were early rumors of a 50 percent cut in staff at Factor 5. As the word goes now, the Lair and Rogue Squadron developer has also shut its doors. According to a forum post which was allegedly made by IGN’s Matt Casamassina, which claims “inside source” tipped him off, today marked an end of Factor 5’s operations. More concrete information was collected by Joystiq with all those depressing stories which led to the closing.
Nintendo’s Mario Kart was at number one for four consecutive weeks and still holds the first position in the UK individual format sales charts for full last week of Christmas. Since the release of the game on April 11th in Europe, the game has almost maintained its top position and the sale has rose 40 percent over the last seven days.
